  7.     Researchers have known for some time that people may harbor
  8. the AIDS virus without showing symptoms or even producing
  9. telltale antibodies. But the duration of such latent infections
  10. has been uncertain. Now a study has shown that some people may
  11. carry the AIDS virus for three years or longer without its being
  12. detected by widely used antibody screening tests. If the results
  13. are confirmed, they could mean that latent AIDS infection is
  14. more common than was once believed.

  16.     The study, reported last week in the New England Journal of
  17. Medicine, followed 133 men without AIDS antibodies who
  18. continued to engage in high-risk sexual activity. A team led by
  19. researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found
  20. that of 31 who carried the AIDS virus, 27 had not produced
  21. antibodies up to three years after the virus was detected. While
  22. the study raises questions about the effectiveness of current
  23. screening tests, which zero in on AIDS antibodies and not the
  24. virus itself, there is a bright side: some infected people may
  25. remain healthy for longer than was previously thought.
